Don’t use people to build the church

Don’t use people to build the church; use the church to build people.

Churches depend upon volunteers — lots of them — bringing their talents, skills and experience together to serve one another and bless the surrounding community. There is always a synergy that takes place when talented people come together with a common purpose, and when God’s anointing is added, some pretty amazing things happen.

One of the traps for church leaders is the tendency to use people. It is an easy trap in which to fall, and it leads to resentment, burnout and broken relationships. The difference may be subtle, but it is significant; give people the opportunity to serve. Provide the tools and platform for them to grow, learn and be fruitful in their service. Guide and mentor, without micromanaging. Give them a safe place to try, and sometimes fail, without condemnation or rejection. Release their dreams and incorporate them into the vision for the church.

Use the church to build people.
