Why Reunion?

Our church is called REUNION. Now and then I get asked how we came up with that name, and what does it mean. Reunion means different things to different people, so there is no simple, single answer. The word “reunion” is meant to remind us of class reunions, family reunions, fond reunions…

For those who have never really attended church, and have never understood that they are alienated from relationship with God because of their own sin, Reunion is a place to come home. We are nurturing a safe, welcoming environment for those exploring what they believe, what they understand about God, about faith, about relationship… we invite their examination. We welcome their questions and even their doubts. After all, our reputation is not on the line; God’s reputation is, and he can handle himself quite well, thanks. We believe that as we live out our faith in solid community, take off the masks of religiosity and allow people to see us at our best and at our worst a special bond of trust is built. You could call it community, family or ohana, but we call it a place to come home.

For those who have been hurt by their past church experience, those who have been so badly burned they have given up on church, Reunion is a place to call home. It’s a different kind of church, a drastic departure from the past experiences that turned people off and sent them away. That doesn’t mean the bar is set low, or that there are no standards of holy living; quite the contrary. We are passionate in our belief that God loves you just the way you are… and he loves you far too much to leave you the way you are. One of the main reasons people have dropped out of church? Church was long on rules and religion, and short on reality and relationship. Reunion has set out to change that. Show up, just as you are. Grab a cup of mediocre free coffee, wander into the school cafeteria and meet some people who might just become your new best friends. Reunion is a place to call home.
